MONONA, Wis. — The man shot and killed by Wisconsin State Troopers near Fort Atkinson last week was a suspect in an armed bank robbery that happened the morning he was killed.
Monona police initially responded to Summit Credit Union at 5809 Monona Drive at 9:44 a.m. for a report of an armed robbery, according to a news release. When they arrived, officers learned that a man entered the bank where he made contact with two employees.
The man reportedly showed a gun and ordered the two employees to take him to the vault. The man escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
Witnesses in the area told officers they saw the man drive off on Frost Woods Road in an older model Oldsmobile Alero or similar vehicle. Police canvassed the area and were able to get video of the suspect’s vehicle leaving the area.
Monona police sent photos of the suspect’s vehicle to local law enforcement agencies, according to the release. A short time later, the Monona Police Department was notified that the suspect vehicle from the robbery appeared to be the same as the one that was involved in the Fort Atkinson shooting.
Officials said they believe the man killed by state troopers, 23-year-old Joseph R. Crawford, was the suspect in the bank robbery from that morning.
The Monona Police Department and the FBI are still investigating the robbery.
