MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission’s decision to demote former police chief Alfonso Morales was reversed in court Friday, according to his attorney.
The commission demoted Morales after criticizing how he handled multiple incidents, including ordering officers to fire tear gas and pepper spray at Black Lives Matter protesters and the arrest of former Milwaukee Bucks player Sterling Brown.
Following his demotion, Morales retired and filed a damage claim against the city.
According to WTMJ-TV, the judge who ruled on the reversal called the commission’s decision a flawed process.
WDJT-TV said the FPC voted Thursday in favor of promoting Assistant Chief Jeffrey Norman to acting chief, as current acting chief Michael Brunson plans to retire.
With the possibility of Milwaukee now having two police chiefs, it is unknown if Morales plans to return to the department.
