MADISON, Wis. — The approval of the second Covid-19 vaccine is raising questions about how exactly distribution will be affected in Wisconsin. SSM Health representatives said they have already vaccinated over 200 health care workers with the Pfizer vaccine.
While the science behind Moderna is similar, their vaccine doesn’t require ultra-cold freezing. The main advantage of this is that it won’t have to be stored at what SSM Health’s Mo Kharbat called “hubs.”
“Here in Wisconsin a number of hub locations were established that had ultra-cold freezing capabilities that received the vaccine from Pfizer and then distributed it to vaccine sites. With Moderna, the vaccine will be directly shipped to vaccination sites without going through hubs,” said Kharbat.
He also said SSM is generally excited about this approval as they worried about the limited quantities received of the Pfizer vaccine. He hopes that with this authorization, they can vaccinate all healthcare workers in Wisconsin.
SSM has not reported any serious reactions from the first dose of Pfizer vaccine so far.
