MADISON, Wis. — A Marshall teen diagnosed with B-cell Leukemia is using his Make-A-Wish wish to raise money for children’s cancer research.
UW Health officials said Lucas Nelson was diagnosed with the disease when he was 13 years old. He and his family moved to Marshall shortly after his diagnosis.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation reached out to Nelson and his family to grant a wish for him because of his diagnosis. While he didn’t initially know what he wanted to ask for, Nelson eventually decided he wanted to use his wish to help others.
That’s when Make-A-Wish stepped in to help Nelson create a fundraiser to raise money for children’s cancer research being done at American Family Children’s Hospital and UW Carbone Cancer Center.
Nelson’s goal is to raise $5,000 to support the ongoing research at both facilities.
“I wanted to create something that reflected how many people like me have had to focus on surviving day after day,” Nelson said. “Because that is what we’re doing, we’re surviving.”
To get Nelson and his family started with their fundraising mission, Make-A-Wish connected them with an organization that specializes in raising money by selling clothing.
Nelson and his dad decided to print t-shirts and hats with the word “survivor” printed in six languages including English, Japanese, Hebrew, Norwegian, German and Scottish Gaelic.
Anyone interested in donating or buying a t-shirt or hat can visit the fundraiser’s website here.
According to UW Health, Nelson is receiving care to maintain his remission.
