BOONE COUNTY, Ill. — Boone County K-9 Loki was killed in the line of duty early Sunday morning, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department shared in a Facebook post.
According to the post, Deputy Robert Rosenkranz and K9 Loki were conducting a traffic stop around 1:30 a.m. on I-90 when a suspected drunk driver hit the back of their squad car. K9 Loki was in the vehicle at the time of the accident and was transferred to Emergency Vet Clinic in Rockford, and later died.

Rosenkranz was not in the vehicle at the time of the accident and received only minor injuries from flying debris. The Illinois State Police are investigating the accident.
Boone County Police referred to K9 Loki as a “hero.”
