ROCKFORD, Ill. — The man accused of killing three people at a Rockford bowling alley and injuring three others was denied bond Monday afternoon.
Officials said 37-year-old Duke Webb of Florida went into Don Carter Lanes on Rockford’s east side Saturday night and started shooting.
According to Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley, Webb has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder.
Webb is a U.S. Army Special Forces Sergeant based in Florida. Officials said he was in Rockford to visit family while on leave.
His attorney said the defendant may suffer from a brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder. Hanley was asked at a press conference Monday afternoon whether mental health issues could prevent Webb from going to trial.
“I’ll leave that question to the defense attorney,” Hanley said. “In a court proceeding yes — a defendant can be found unfit to stand trial. That could be a possibility. I can’t comment as to whether that’ll happen, when that’s going to happen, or what would be the outcome of that.”
Hanley said the entire incident was captured on surveillance video and that Webb admitted to the shooting. Authorities said the man also directed officers to the locations of the two firearms he used.
The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office has since identified the three victims killed in the shooting.
Webb is due back in court in February.
