MADISON, Wis. — The City of Madison is reminding residents that they have until Thursday at noon to remove snow off sidewalks or risk facing a $124 fine.
According to the City of Madison’s Housing Inspection Supervisor JoseMaria Donoso, last year the city issued 649 citations for people failing to properly clear off snow from sidewalks. Madison’s city ordinance requires that sidewalks be cleared of all snow and ice no later than noon the day following each snowfall.
“This year so far we wrote 137,” Donoso said. “If you compare the same timeline last year, we were at 63.”
After the first citation, the next one will cost $187. If homeowners fail to remove the snow after that, the city will send a crew to remove it and will bill you for it on your property taxes.
Residents who are on vacation are not exempt from clearing their sidewalks. Donoso suggests chatting with your neighbors to clear it for you, and you can return the favor later.
If you have a disability and cannot meet the city’s deadline of snow removal, you can call Building Inspection at (608) 266-4551 to be added to the 72-hour extension list.
“So we encourage owners to have the sidewalks cleared for pedestrians, first responders, mail carriers, anyone who uses the sidewalk,” Donoso said.
The City of Madison Streets Division also reminds people who live or park in snow emergency zones to follow alternate side parking rules to allow snow plows to clear the streets. Those who do not follow the rules face a $60 fine plus a towing fee of $65.
Residents can sign up for city winter alerts through the City of Madison’s website here.
The city also has various locations where residents can pick up sand to use on the ice. Locations can be found here.
