MADISON, Wis. — Dr. Shon Barnes told the community he is “humbled and excited” to take on the role of Madison’s next police chief.
Barnes shared the message on MPD’s Facebook page Monday.
“It has been my dream to improve the lives of a diverse community by making a significant contribution to policing,” Barnes said.

He said he hopes to “create culture within the Madison Police Department that prioritizes fairness, community inclusion and ethical policing.”
He also thanked residents for entrusting him with their public safety.
Barnes accepted the job offer last month after the Police and Fire Commission made the decision on a 3-2 vote. He will become Chief of Police on Feb. 1.
