KENOSHA, Wis. — Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley announced Tuesday that the officer who shot Jacob Blake in the back seven times in August will not face criminal charges.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Kenosha police officers, including Sheskey, responded to the scene for a report of a “domestic incident.” When they were at the scene, officers tried to arrest Blake and used a Taser on him in a failed attempt to stop him. DOJ officials said Blake walked around his vehicle, opened the door and leaned forward. That’s when Sheskey held on to Blake’s shirt and shot him 7 times in the back.
Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian and Police Chief Daniel Miskinis announced Sunday that they were planning “precautionary efforts to ensure the safety of the public, neighborhoods, businesses and protestors” ahead of the charging decision. Monday, the city declared a state of emergency that would last eight days from the point a charging decision was declared, and Gov. Tony Evers has activated 500 National Guard troops to assist the city if needed.
In a press conference after the August shooting, Antaramian said justice will be served.
“I cannot think of anything that is harder than what just occurred to them,” Antamarian said. “The commitment that I make to everyone — I make to their family, to the officer and everyone else — is justice will be served.”
Throughout his seven-year career with the Kenosha Police Department, Sheskey has been the subject of five internal investigations.
