MADISON, Wis. – A chimney fire caused significant damage to a home on Madison’s east side Wednesday.
Firefighters were dispatched to a home on Buckeye Road just east of Stoughton Road. One person was home at the time and able to get out safely with the family dog.
Madison firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to find a fire above the fireplace.
No injuries were reported. Seven people are temporarily displaced, according to a release by the city’s fire department. They should be able to return home later this week, the release said.
Masonry work was being done on the chimney in the hours prior to the fire. Investigators said a propane torch was used to heat the brick and mortar to prevent it from freezing while under construction. They believe this is what caused the fire.
Damages are estimated at more than $20,000.
