MADISON, Wis. — Madison mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway is reacting to the violence at the U.S. Capitol and the attacks on the integrity of the election that preceded it.
Speaking during her weekly briefing, the mayor called the attack on the U.S. Capitol an “absolutely unprecedented assault on our democracy.”
Referencing President Donald Trump’s constant attacks on the legitimacy of Wisconsin’s election results and challenges to ballots in Dane and Milwaukee Counties, Rhodes-Conway reiterated that the city’s election results were accurate and legitimate.
“Prior to the armed invasion of the Capitol, the President of the United States attacked Wisconsin’s, specifically Madison’s, election integrity,” said Rhodes-Conway. “Our election was conducted just as it always has been — with professionalism, integrity and multiple levels of oversight and accountability.”
The mayor also called for further action against President Trump and others.
“Those who attacked the integrity of our elections and encouraged this attempted coup in Wisconsin and around the nation must be held to account,” she said.
President-elect Joe Biden won Wisconsin by just over 20,000 votes. President Trump’s campaign tried to get more than 221,000 votes thrown out, including those collected at Madison’s “Democracy in the Park” events. Those challenges were ultimately rejected by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
“I want to assure all Madisonians that we’re going to get through this,” the mayor said. “It is my hope that our democracy will be strengthened by the lessons that we have learned over the past few months.”
