MADISON, Wis. — Senator Ron Johnson said Tuesday that he hopes anyone engaging in violence while exercising their First Amendment right gets “arrested and prosecuted to the full extend of the law.”
Johnson shared the sentiment in a Tweet calling for anyone protesting to do so “PEACEFULLY.”
Anyone wishing to exercise your First Amendment right to peaceably assemble: Please do so PEACEFULLY.
If you engage in any form of violence, I sincerely hope you are arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I don’t care what your cause is or who you support.

In the wake of the riot at the U.S. Capitol, Johnson called for those who broke in to “respect law enforcement and peacefully disperse.” Prior to the violence at the Capitol, the Associated Press reported that Johnson planned to object to the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.
While Johnson did not end up objecting to the results when Congress convened following the insurrection, he did release the statement he planned to use if he had objected as originally planned. In it, Johnson shared baseless and unfounded claims of voter fraud.
