MADISON, Wis. — American Family Insurance will provide $750,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County over the next three years to help fund college and career readiness programs.
The funding will benefit an in-school and out-of-school partnership between the Madison Metropolitan School District and the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County.
The collaborative program, which includes the MMSD-run Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) and BGCDC-run Teens of Promise (TOPS), helps students develop skills needed for a successful career and college experience.
“We would not be where we are today without the support of American Family Insurance. We have one of the most successful college access and success programs certainly in Dane County. Certainly in Wisconsin and likely the Midwest, if not nationally,” BGCDC President and CEO Michael Johnson said. “Thank you American Family Insurance on behalf of the 4,476 students we’ve served thus far and the thousands of students we will prepare for academic success in the future.”
Over the past five years, American Family Insurance and the American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation have donated $1 million to the program to help the students who benefit.
“Our investment in the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County AVID-TOPS program in 2016 was the first major commitment of the newly formed American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation because it was, and continues to be, one of the most successful and statistically significant drivers of equity in the Madison Metropolitan School District,” said Jim Buchheim, American Family corporate and social impact officer. “Five years later, we’re pleased to continue our investment in this program because we fully recognize the opportunities and support BGCDC provides as advocates for scholars throughout their educational journeys.”
Students in the program have had fewer excused and unexcused absences than their peers; received higher cumulative GPAs; graduated from high school at higher rates; and enrolled in post-secondary education at higher levels.
