BARABOO, Wis. — The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office says they are looking to speak to a group of people who may be potential witnesses to a murder at Devil’s Lake State Park last year that remains unsolved.
The sheriff’s office stressed the people shown in the photo are potential witnesses and should not be considered suspects in the homicide, which the department has called its “highest priority” case.
Authorities are hoping to identify the people and find a way to get in contact with them.
They’ve received hundreds of possible tips since the murder in October 2020, when 24-year-old John Craig Schmutzer was attacked and killed while hiking alone along the Grottos Trail at Devil’s Lake. So far, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified.
Authorities believe Schmutzer was attacked by a stranger as part of a random attack. In the several months since the murder, they have stressed the importance of people with information stepping forward.
Anyone with information should contact the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office at (608) 356-4895 or anonymously to the Sauk County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-847-7285.
