MADISON, Wis. — It’s been two years since we could say this: We have a bracket and we will have an NCAA tournament this year.
Now it’s time to pick your March Madness winners.
Due to the pandemic you’ll notice some changes to how the bracket is seeded. Teams are placed based on rankings, instead geography.
This method is called using the ‘s curve’ to fill the bracket.
There are 37 teams this year which is one more than normal and 31 automatic qualifiers. That’s fewer than normal.
Madison College math instructor Paul Peeders says the impacts of Covid-19 could be a deal breaker on tournament play and can change brackets quickly.
“You know you are bringing in all those teams in to play in a small space, and if one of those teams has an issue with Covid then they are out,” Peeders said. “That team moves on, so your bracket could be blown up with one simple positive Covid test.”
