TOWN OF BELOIT, Wis — A car driving away from police during a chase early Saturday morning hit a Beloit squad car and sent two people, including a Beloit police officer to the hospital.
According to a press release from the Town of Beloit Police Department, at around 12:30 a.m. officers from the City of Beloit attempted to stop a car at the intersection of Glen and Bayliss avenue.
At the same time, a Town of Beloit officer was conducting a traffic stop for a suspected OWI in the 3100 block of Riverside Dr.
Police said the driver in the City of Beloit refused to pull over and began driving away. Officials said that at that time the City officers began a vehicle pursuit to attempt to stop the driver.
The chase went north on Riverside Drive for roughly two miles toward where the Town of Beloit police officer was conducting a traffic stop.
The Town officer was in his squad car when the fleeing vehicle came by and crashed into the driver’s side of the squad car. The suspect car rolled over after the crash.
Both the fleeing driver and the officer were transported to a local hospital. According to the Town of Beloit Police Department, its officer sustained minor neck and back injuries but has been released from the hospital.
Officials do not currently know the condition of the other driver.
The City of Beloit Police Department is investigating the chase while the Rock County Sheriff’s Department investigates the crash.
