MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding people that fire danger remains high across the state this weekend.
According to a news release, there were 36 fires burning over 100 acres on Saturday. Five structures were burned while others were threatened, officials said.
Officials said fire danger is expected to remain high to very high across the state on Sunday. A very high risk of danger on Saturday was in several counties, including Adams, La Crosse, Portage and Winnebago. A high risk was in Dane, Dodge, Kenosha and others.
The release said 47% of wildfires in 2021 have been caused by debris burning, while fires caused by careless burning become more frequent in the spring.
The DNR requires burning permits in many parts of the state to conduct legal and responsible burning outdoors.
