MADISON, Wis. — There is no doubting that the past year has been stressful for a lot of people for many different reasons.
While many people have lost a lot during the COVID-19 pandemic, psychologists say focusing on the things we appreciate and are grateful for right now can help us have a healthier perspective on the past year.
UW Health Distinguished Psychologist Shilagh Mirgain says the research showing the benefits of expressing gratitude during hard times is clear.
“Expressing positive emotions, including gratitude, improves our health, happiness and overall well-being,” Mirgain says. “It is a free and easy practice that helps us focus on what we value, what is in our control, and what we can give back to those who’ve helped us during our more difficult moments.”
There are a lot of ways to show gratitude, and most of them are simple, Mirgain says. It can be as easy as a phone call, a letter, or just saying the words to someone in person.
UW Health is hoping people are willing to express their gratitude for the doctors who have worked so hard over the past year. Ahead of National Doctors’ Day on Tuesday, March 30th, the health system is collecting messages of gratitude for their doctors.
Those who want to thank a doctor or other health care provider who has made a difference in their lives and submit a message online.
