MADISON, Wis. — Six people were displaced in Madison on Sunday afternoon after a fire caused by smoking materials that were improperly discarded.
According to a news release, officials responded to the 1100 block of Starlight Drive around 2:30 p.m.
The release said a person living at the house said there was visible smoke and flames on an exterior wall.
Crews said only four of the six people who live at the house were home at the time the fire broke out. All four people made it out safely and reported hearing smoke alarms as they evacuated.
MG&E disconnected the electrical service to the home after the fire, while the American Red Cross is assisting the residents.
The initial damage is estimated at $50,000.
