MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers says he will continue to work to keep Wisconsinites safe during the coronavirus pandemic, despite a state Supreme Court decision Wednesday that ruled he does not have the power to continue issuing public health orders.
“Since the beginning of this pandemic, I’ve worked to keep Wisconsinites healthy and safe, and I’ve trusted the science and public health experts to guide our decision making,” Evers said in a statement Wednesday morning.
The decision also throws out Evers’ current statewide mask mandate, although local mandates — like the ones in Dane and Rock County — remain in place.
“Our fight against COVID-19 isn’t over,” Evers said. “While we work to get folks vaccinated as quickly as we can, we know wearing a mask saves lives, and we still need Wisconsinites to mask up so we can beat this virus and bounce back from this pandemic.”
Evers tweeted a simple message shortly before the court’s decision was announced — “Wear a mask. Help save lives.”
The governor announced Tuesday that everyone aged 16 and up in the state will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine starting Monday, April 5th.
