DEFOREST, Wis. — Community members came together for a car-parade Saturday to celebrate a local 3-year-old’s last chemotherapy treatment.
“It was family members, to friends, to school providers, to just anyone in our community that’s really cared to pray and take time out of their day to think of us,” said Amanda Murphy.
Her son, 3-year-old Ike, completed his chemo treatments for Wilms Tumors, a cancer most common in children under the age of 5 on Tuesday. The family said they discovered the tumors on his Kidneys in July.
“He is actually our second son with Wilms Cancer our first son is Hank. So, Hank was a year when he was also diagnosed with Wilms cancer,” Murphy said.
Hank is now a healthy 6-year-old who went through treatment when the tumors were first discovered. He was there with Ike’s oldest brother, Hoyt, to celebrate Ike’s success Saturday.
The event was organized by Jan Holling, a wish granter at Make-A-Wish Wisconsin.
While Ike was receiving his treatments, someone recommended him and his family for a wish.
“They’re a very outdoor kind of family,” Holling said. “Their wish was for a camper and Make-A-Wish granted it.”
They spent their first night in the camper on Friday night before the parade.
John and Amanda Murphy and their three boys will be spending their summer in the camper.
“We are going to take it to Minnesota first and do some sightseeing around there, and then we will be going wherever our heart desires to go.”
