MADISON, Wis. — One person was hospitalized Wednesday morning following a fiery single-vehicle crash on Madison’s near east side.
Firefighters with the Madison Fire Department responded to the intersection of East Washington Avenue and North Dickinson Street around 4 a.m. When they arrived at the scene, crews found an SUV with heavy front-end damage that had hit a tree.
Authorities said the driver was unresponsive and still inside the vehicle when they arrived. The vehicle’s engine compartment was also on fire.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire while other crews worked to rescue the driver from the SUV.
Officials said the fire was extinguished before the fire spread to the passenger compartment, but first responders were concerned the driver may have inhaled smoke.
The driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries they suffered in the crash.
The Madison Police Department also responded to the scene to investigate the crash.
