MADISON, Wis. – The American Red Cross is helping more than a dozen people following an apartment fire on Madison’s east side.
A tenant called 911 around 3:30 a.m. Monday after noticing smoke inside the building, according to a release from the Madison Fire Department. The apartment building is located along the 1600 block of Kings Mill Way.
All residents were safely evacuated. One person was treated and released by medics on scene, the release said.
Six units were damaged during the fire. Fourteen people, including five children, were displaced by the fire, according to a spokesman for the American Red Cross.
Investigators estimate the damages around $50,000.
They believe improperly discarded smoking materials caused the fire.
