MADISON, Wis. — UW-Madison leaders said Monday that several students may face disciplinary action for violations of public health orders and/or unlawful activity at the Mifflin Street Block Party.
The statement from the university comes after footage of a vandalized SUV at the block party circulated on social media over the weekend.
“We are beginning investigations into the conduct of several students. Any students found to have violated laws, public health orders or campus policies may face university disciplinary action in addition to sanctions by the city,” the statement reads. “In advance of the event, UW–Madison messaged all students urging them to avoid crowds and to continue to follow all health protocols.”
Videos and photos posted on Instagram by Barstool Sports affiliate BadgerBarStool appear to show thousands of party-goers packed together with few people wearing masks or social distancing. One of the posts shows a video of an SUV with a shattered windshield. Another photo appears to show people standing on top of the same white SUV.
In the wake of the massive party, Madison police said thousands of people gathered and four were cited for various offenses, but the corresponding incident report made no mention of the vandalized vehicle. Madison police have since confirmed to News 3 Now that authorities are working to identify a suspect or suspects responsible for vandalizing an SUV.
The latest public health order from Public Health Madison & Dane County removed outdoor masking requirements and limits on the size of outdoor gatherings.
