MADISON, Wis.– With updated mask guidelines and the return of summer-like temperatures, many people are ready for outdoor life to return to something more normal. And soon, it will.
The City of Madison is working to bring back several seasonal staples, including Ride the Drive.
Every June, the city shuts down John Nolen Drive to cars and opens it to bikes. While that won’t exactly happen this year, the event will return.
“We knew we wanted to do Ride the Drive,” said Ann Shea, Public Information Officer for the Madison Parks division. After canceling the 2020 event, Shea was tasked with helping it return, as long as the crowds didn’t.
“We usually have upwards of 10,000 bikers,” she explained.
So in the name of social distancing, Shea reinvented this year’s version, scheduled for Sunday, June 6.
The 2021 ride will happen at four Madison parks:
- Warner Park (on the north side)
- Wingra Park (on the near-west side)
- Marlborough (on the southwest side)
- Kennedy (on the east side)
In compliance with the latest CDC guidelines, masks will not be required, except for when social distancing isn’t possible.
All outdoor events in Dane County follow the public health orders currently in place. You can find the latest guidelines in this document, which is continuously updated.
