MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man was sentenced Monday to seven years in prison for robbing a Williamson Street coffee shop last summer.
Federal court officials said 29-year-old Nathaniel Homestead pled guilty in February to robbing Ground Zero Coffee on July 19, 2020.
During the robbery, Homestead showed he had a handgun tucked in his waistband. An employee then handed over cash from the register before Homestead ran off.
Police arrested Homestead a few blocks away and found his handgun in a backpack at a beach not far away.
After his arrest, Homestead admitted to walking by the coffee shop and spontaneously thinking he should rob it, officials said. He reportedly told police he robbed the store for drug money and that he was under the influence of methamphetamine and crack cocaine at the time.
Homestead was on state supervision at the time of the robbery for two different cases.
Authorities charged Homestead in connection with the robbery in September 2020. He pled guilty to charges in February of this year. His seven-year sentence will be followed by three years of supervision.
The charges against Homestead came as the result of an investigation by the Madison Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
