MADISON, Wis. — Madison police took a 13-year-old into custody over the weekend after he reportedly crashed a stolen vehicle on Madison’s west side, injuring one person in the process.
According to an incident report, police were dispatched to the intersection of Gammon Road and the westbound Beltline off ramp shortly after 12:15 a.m. on Memorial day for a report of a crash. When officers arrived, they found one of the cars was unoccupied. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to a local hospital.
A subsequent investigation revealed that a 13-year-old was driving the stolen car at the time of the crash. Investigators said the stolen vehicle was traveling at high speeds and without its headlights on just before the crash.
The teen was taken to a local hospital for evaluation before being taken to the Juvenile Reception Center for operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent. He was also cited for hit-and-run involving injury, operating whiteout required lamps lighted, and failure to slow for a flashing yellow signal.
Authorities said the stolen vehicle was left unlocked with the keys inside when it was stolen.
