MADISON, Wis. — An Edgerton man who came to Madison during last summer’s civil unrest while armed with a handgun was sentenced Friday to 27 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a gun.
According to court officials, 29-year-old Kyle Olson came up to Madison the night of May 31, 2020 after seeing a live video feed of the ongoing unrest. Olson said he drove up to see the events for himself and that he brought a loaded .45 caliber handgun with him for protection. Olson was on supervision after being released from state prison for four car theft convictions.
While in downtown Madison, police saw Olson take the gun out of his trunk, tuck it into his waistband and hide it with his shirt. Officers then detained Olson to determine if he had a valid concealed carry permit amid the ongoing chaos downtown.
Olson reportedly told police he was a felon and knew he shouldn’t be armed.
During sentencing, District Judge William M. Conley said he was thankful police intervened, especially because Olson said he drove to Madison because he was “tired of watching people burn down buildings.”
The charge against Olson came as the result of an investigaiton by the Madison Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
