WAUSAU, Wis. — This week we’re taking a look at some of the state’s great cities on Wandering Wisconsin. Wednesday brings us to the “Far Away Place”: Wausau.
Not actually very far from Madison, the native Chippewa population named it that because it was the destination for their yearly hunt.
Located right on the Wisconsin River, it’s a popular place for hiking, fishing and boating in central Wisconsin.
Rib Mountain State Park and Granite Peak are both nearby.
There’s also a growing arts scene with the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, the Grand Theater, and lots of outdoor concerts in the city’s center.
