MADISON, Wis. — The popularity of boating activities and spending time on Wisconsin’s lakes has increased since the start of the pandemic, but more congested waters means more chance of injuries and incidents.
Last year, boating companies and rentals saw a spike in sales. It isn’t any different this year as people are wanting to get outside and enjoy the warm weather.
“With COVID, a lot of people were able to get out of their house and enjoy the lakes we have here in the county so unfortunately not everyone has boating experience. It’s really important people brush up on their safety,” said Dane County Sheriff Deputy Kelsey Gilmore.
While boating is a fun summer activity, it comes with safety precautions not all are aware of.
Darren Kuhn, Boating Law Administrator for the DNR, says there’s been an uptick in accidents on the water this season.
“It’s absolutely insane on our water ways right now, and unfortunately some of our boaters are not necessarily changing their behaviors to address the more congested water system,” said Kuhn. “As a result were seeing more accidents and incidents than we probably should.”
In 2020, the DNR reported 22 fatalities from boat related incidents.
It’s only July, and the DNR is reporting 13 deaths. At this pace, officials say we will easily surpass the number of deaths last year.
“I hope the last tragedy we had this past weekend, around the state, is the last fatality we have this year or ever going through boating season. Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s going to be the case,” said Kuhn.
Officials say these incidents can be avoided, though. Deputy Gilmore shares easy things to do to stay safe and still have fun while doing so.
“Watch the alcohol consumption, stay hydrated, be careful of other people in the water and wear your sunscreen,” said Gilmore.
The number one cause of boating related incidents is moving too fast — with alcohol usually on board.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office says to always have a life jacket on board, and to use it whenever you feel unsafe.
“It may give you weird tan lines, but it can save your life,” said Gilmore.
Kuhn says people have to recognize how dangerous boating can be if we want a good end to boating season.
