MADISON, Wis. — Investigators from the Madison Fire Department are blaming improperly discarded fireworks for a second house fire over the weekend that damaged two homes.
The fire started just after 10 p.m. on Sunday night.
Fire crews were called to a home on Jubilee Circle on the city’s east side after reports of a fire on the outside of a house there. People living in the home were able to put most of the fire out with a garden hose before firefighters arrived just a few minutes after the call.
Firefighters from Engine 13 were able to put out the rest of the fire and soaked the attic above the garage to make sure the fire wouldn’t spread. Crews also used ventilation fans to clear the home of smoke and carbon monoxide.
The family was able to stay in their home, although the fire did about $50,000 in damage. The fire also did some minor damage to the siding of the house next door.
The fire was the second one the Madison Fire Department determined was caused by improperly discarded fireworks over the 4th of July weekend. Six people and a dog were displaced from a home on Star Spangled Trail in the early morning hours of Sunday in a fire that caused about $100,000 in damage.
