MADISON, Wis. — A local philanthropist has donated $1 million to the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County for its new regional workforce center.
Jerry Frautschi and his wife Pleasant Rowland are major philanthropists in Madison, with Frautschi being from the Madison area.
A news release Thursday said the funds will help cover construction costs and operating expenses to prepare participants for jobs as plumbers, electricians and other in-demand trades. The average annual pay for skilled trades jobs in the Madison area is roughly $43,000, or $21.50 per hour.
“We are incredibly grateful for this investment in the future of young people in our community,” said Michael Johnson, president and CEO of BGCDC. “It will allow us to continue providing opportunities for thousands of young people throughout Dane County to help them earn a sustainable living.”
With BGCDC serving youth from various backgrounds, the center will aim to diversify the workforce.
“The BGCDC plays a vitally important role in helping to prepare the youth in our communities for their future success,” Frautschi said. “The new workforce center will be a shining example of vision, collaboration and community support. Pleasant and I are both proud to be among the organization’s many supporters.”
The center is slated to open next summer in Fitchburg.
