MADISON, Wis. — Gov. Tony Evers has ordered flags be flown at half-staff in honor of a Wisconsin Airforce airman who lost his life in a plane crash during the Korean War.
Evers made the order in honor of U.S. Airforce Airman 2nd Class Edward J. Miller, who died Nov. 22 1952 alongside 51 other soldiers. The soldiers lost their lives when a troop transport plane crashed into Mt. Gannett near Anchorage, Alaska during a blizzard.
Miller’s remains were identified in 2019 following a multi-year search conducted by military recovery teams.
“Airman 2nd Class Edward J. Miller gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving, and we honor and remember his bravery and service as he returns home to his final resting place,” Evers said. “On behalf of the state of Wisconsin, we thank Airman 2nd Class Miller for his service, selflessness, and sacrifice, and offer our sincere condolences to his family members and loved ones as they find closure so many years later.”
Miller will be laid to rest with full military honors at Maple Hill Cemetery in Evansville, Wisconsin on Saturday, July 17. His remains will be escorted from Milwaukee’s General Mitchell Airport to Evansville on Friday.
Evers executive order lowering the flags to half-staff is in effect from sunrise to sunset on Saturday. Read the full executive order here.
