MADISON, Wis. — The Culver’s Isthmus Bowl, the first-ever college football bowl game to be held in Wisconsin, will be coming to the Madison area later this year.
The bowl will feature two Division III teams from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) on November 20, 2021 at Verona High School’s new football stadium.
“The Culver’s Isthmus Bowl was created to further showcase the two best conferences in NCAA Division III athletics nationwide,” bowl game founder and director Mike Shaw said in a statement. “Putting together the first bowl game in Wisconsin state history is exciting, but bringing it to my hometown of Madison is a dream come true.”
Organizers say Madison’s long college football tradition made it an easy decision to bring a bowl game to the area.
“The greater Madison area is passionate about college football,” Madison Area Sports Commission vice president Jamie Patrick said. “After a year with few live sporting events, we are excited to bring the community this new fall bowl game and recognize a group of talented Division III athletes.”
The WIAC includes UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Stout and UW-Whitewater. The CCIW includes Augustana College, Carroll University, Carthage College, Elmhurst University, Illinois Wesleyan University, Millikin University, North Central College, North Park University, Washington University in St. Louis and Wheaton College.
Teams for the game will be determined by one of three scenarios, depending on which teams qualify for the Division III playoffs.
The first scenario would be the 2nd place team in the WIAC against the 2nd place team in the CCIW. The second scenario would be the 3rd place team in the WIAC against the 3rd place team in the CCIW. The third scenario would be the 2nd place team in the WIAC against the 3rd place team in the CCIW, or vice versa.
First place teams in the conferences automatically qualify for the Division III playoffs, and would not play in the Culver’s Isthmus Bowl.
Tickets for the game will be $10 and will go on sale starting October 1. A portion of the sales will go to benefit the Special Olympics of Wisconsin.
