MADISON, Wis. — A new proposal at the Wisconsin State Capitol is aiming to protect survivors of sexual assault.
Republicans introduced “Kayleigh’s Law” Wednesday. The proposed legislation would allow certain sexual assault victims to petition the court for a lifetime restraining order against their convicted assailant.
The proposal is named after Kaleigh Kozak, who was sexually assaulted as a child. She says her goal is to make sure every survivor is protected.
“Every victim in every state matters,” Kozak said at Wednesday’s event. “I’m hopeful that this law will soon pass here and that you will have the direct protection that you deserve because you still matter.”
Right now in Wisconsin, a restraining order may be issued for an adult for up to four years and for a child for up to two years. Those orders can be extended by four years for adults and two years for children, with the option for 10 years for adults and five years for children if there is a substantial risk to the survivor.
