CAMBRIDGE, Wis. — A group broke ground for a new bike path in Cambridge stretching north toward the Glacial Drumlin State Trail on Sunday afternoon.
The trail is being named after 2017 Wisconsin Bicycling Hall of Fame inductee — and Cambridge native — Phil Van Valkenberg.
The village board approved the trail name in April.
According to local media reports, the new stretch will cost more than $400,000 to design and build, but organizers that spoke to News 3 Now on Sunday said this is a win for the community.
“I think it’s going to be a huge asset to the community,” said group treasurer Steve Struss. “We’re hoping to get people from Deerfield, Lake Mills. We see it as a boon for tourism.”
Van Valkenberg organized his first ride around the Capitol Square in Madison in 1973.
