MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Madison will require students, employees and visitors to wear masks inside campus buildings beginning Thursday.
A news release Tuesday said the decision was made as the delta variant’s emergence has led to a rise in new COVID-19 cases. Although Dane County and the UW-Madison campus have higher vaccination rates than other parts of the state, the virus has continued to spread among unvaccinated residents.
“We urge everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible; this is the most effective way to limit the ability of the virus to spread, allowing us to ease restrictions sooner,” the university said in a statement.
Masking will not be required in dorm rooms or while outside. The university will continue to monitor COVID transmission rates on campus and will revisit the mask policies.
The masking requirement can only remain in effect for 30 days unless approved by the Republican-controlled Joint Committee for Review of Administrative Rules.
