MADISON, Wis. — Programs designed to build children’s trust in police are nothing new, but Madison is taking a slightly different approach.
Working with Big Brothers Big Sisters Dane County, MPD’s Black Officer Coalition is running their fourth annual Leadership Camp. The camp allows Littles, kids from Big Brothers Big Sisters to learn about things like drones and K-9 units while forming bonds with officers.
MPD officer Lucien Senatus says that programs like the camp are vital in forging connections with the public, particularly in today’s society.
“Historically with communities, especially communities of color there’s been some distrust or some friction,” said Senatus. “We hope that by building this bridge that they feel more comfortable around us.”
Organized by MPD’s CORE program, which focuses on community outreach, the camp lasts a week, culminating in a celebration dinner tomorrow at the DoubleTree hotel.
Senatus says he hopes the kids take away a feeling of trust from the experience.
“When they see us in the streets we want them to be able to trust us, ask for help,” said Senatus.
Overall, officers are optimistic about the program’s growth, despite its cancellation last year due to COVID.
“Hopefully we can open it up to more organizations or to the public,” said Senatus.
