An Alert Day is in place for Tuesday for two standout reasons: heat & severe weather possibilities. Temperatures in the lower 90s with dew points into the upper 70s will lead to Heat Index values as high as 105°+. The high heat and humidity will also lead to a dew severe thunderstorms with high winds that could be damaging at times, hail and heavy rainfall.
According to the Storm Prediction Center for their day 2 outlook, much of Wisconsin from North to South are under the slight risk category (level 2 out of 5) for severe weather. Areas in Central and Southern Wisconsin are under an Enhanced risk (level 3 out of 5) for Tuesday. With the increase in heat, humidity mixed with the sunshine. Confidence in severe weather to occur in the late afternoon and evening is High. Main threats with these strong to severe storms remain strong winds that could be damaging at times, heavy rainfall and hail; however, a potential isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
In addition to the severe weather risk, be mindful of the heat for tomorrow. With the increase in base temperatures added into dewpoints that may reach into the middle 70 degree range. It will feel like you are in a tropical island. Be sure to maintain hydration, find cool areas, and, to limit any strenuous outdoor activities.
Now is the time to create a game plan for Tuesday. Timing for the storms is expected around the evening commute home, plan on alternate routes and taking it slow when heading home.
