MADISON, Wis. — A Madison police officer was nearly struck by a vehicle on East Washington Avenue while conducting a traffic stop on another vehicle, authorities said.
According to an incident report, an officer with the city’s Traffic Enforcement Safety Team initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of East Washington Avenue and North Marquette Street around 7:45 a.m. The speeding vehicle pulled over into the bus lane, and the officer did the same.
Shortly after the officer got out of the squad car, another vehicle traveling in the right outbound lane of East Washington Avenue crashed into the squad car, narrowly missing the officer.
The driver of the vehicle that crashed into the squad car was cited for passing a stopped emergency vehicle, inattentive driving and a suspended license.
Police said drivers should be mindful to slow down or shift lanes when driving past squad cars, ambulances, fire trucks, and other utility vehicles that are stopped on the side of the road with warning lights flashing.
