MADISON, Wis. — Madison school officials are reacting after a 17-year-old high school student died after being shot at a party over the weekend.
“This was heartbreaking news to all of us at MMSD,” district spokesperson Tim LeMonds said in a statement to News 3 Now. “Although information has been very limited beyond what has been reported in the news and on social media, MMSD staff are focused on developing a comprehensive support plan to assist in connecting both students and staff with the services they need during this difficult time.”
Police say the shooting happened just before midnight on Saturday night outside a home on Lathrop Street. Witnesses told police about 100 people were at a party outside the home when the shots were fired.
In a press conference over the weekend, police said a 17-year-old arrived at a nearby hospital after being shot, but eventually died from his injuries.
The Madison Police Department has not released the name of the person killed, but did confirm he was a high school student in the Madison Metropolitan School District. Police have not released more information on the shooting at this time as they continue to investigate.
