SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — The City of Sun Prairie is using art to help educate kids about stormwater pollution.
Dane Arts Mural Arts (DAMA) and more than a dozen kids from the Sun Prairie YMCA Camp Cardinal spent Tuesday painting storm drains.
The project involves painting a mural around storm sewer inlets around the city. Organizers say it helps teach kids why things like plastic bags, leaves and aluminum cans shouldn’t go down storm drains, while also giving them a sense of personal pride and community engagement.
“It’s more of an ownership, and interest and pride in their community” DAMA’s Gabrielle Javier-Cerulli said. “These kids will walk past this for the next 10 years.”
Between 20 and 30 of the murals have already been painted on storm drains around Dane County since the program started in 2018. You can find more on the program here.
