SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — Sun Prairie is the latest local city to commit to reducing traffic deaths and injuries to zero.
The city announced it is joining the “Vision Zero” initiative after the city council passed a resolution Tuesday night.
“Vision Zero” is an effort that has been adopted by more than 40 communities across the country already — including Madison — with the goal of cutting the number of traffic fatalities and injuries down to zero in the future.
To become a “Vision Zero” community, the city has to establish a plan or strategy to increase traffic safety. Even before Sun Prairie’s city council passed the resolution this week, the city reduced speed limits on Main Street down to 25 mph. Since that reduction, the city says it has seen fewer crashes on the Main Street corridor, although they say it can’t be said for sure that the speed reduction alone led to fewer crashes.
Sun Prairie has also created a Pedestrian Safety Task Force Hub Site, giving the community a tool to see the latest numbers on serious injuries and deaths in the area, information on the task force, and a way for people to report safety hazards.
The City of Madison joined the “Vision Zero” initiative earlier this year, pledging to work toward zero traffic deaths in the city by 2030.
