WEST POINT TOWNSHIP, Wis. — Two people were hospitalized Thursday morning when a semi-truck swerved and rolled while trying to avoid a crash with another vehicle.
Crews were dispatched to State Highway 60 in West Point Township shortly after 11:45 a.m. after getting a report of a two-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck and a car.
According to an investigation by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, a Chevrolet Silverado was driving east on the highway with an unsecured wheelbarrow in the truck’s bed. Authorities said the wheelbarrow fell off the truck and into the eastbound lane, causing a trailing Toyota Highlander to swerve to the right to avoid the wheelbarrow. The Toyota then overcorrected and veered into the path of the semi-truck that was traveling westbound on the highway.
The semi then swerved to the right to avoid crashing into the Toyota, but the vehicles crashed into each other. The semi overturned in the north ditch while swerving to avoid the crash.
When crews arrived, they found the overturned semi-truck leaking fuel. The Toyota had sustained major front-end damage.
The drivers of both the semi and Toyota were transported to a local hospital by Lodi first responders. The driver of the Chevrolet truck remained at the scene and was uninjured.
Lodi police and emergency medical services, Prairie du Sac fire crews, Bill’s Towing and Blystone’s Towing & Recovery helped at the scene.
