MADISON, Wis. — Madison Teachers Inc. — the union that represents teachers in the Madison Metropolitan School District — has come out in full support of a COVID-19 vaccine requirement for teachers and staff.
MTI’s Board of Directors issued a statement Monday morning saying its members “overwhelmingly agree” that staff should get vaccinated.
“MTI members overwhelmingly agree that MMSD staff should share proof of their COVID-19 vaccination to the employer, or be subject to weekly testing,” the statement reads. “Our Union supports maintaining the highest level of public safety for all MMSD students and staff.”
Madison’s school board is expected to meet Monday night to discuss the potential requirement. A vote on the matter would likely come in late September.
Last week, MMSD Superintendent Dr. Carlton Jenkins said he’s in favor of a vaccine requirement.
If passed, MMSD would be the first district in Wisconsin to require vaccinations for teachers.
