An associate veterinarian at a pet clinic in Dubuque has pled guilty to a federal charge for writing fake prescriptions and taking the medication herself. The US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa says 42-year-old Kristi Schreiber entered her plea Monday. She was charged with acquiring a controlled substance by means of misrepresentation, fraud or deception. Officials say Schreiber wrote false prescriptions for dogs that did not exist or for dogs that did not need the medication. The drug is a controlled substance used to treat moderate pain and is a human pain-killer that is safe for dogs too. During an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Schreiber admitted to taking the medication herself. She faces up to 4 years in prison and a quarter-million dollar fine. A sentencing hearing has not been set yet.
