MADISON, Wis. — If you smell something stinky on Madison’s east side over the next day or two, it might be coming from the Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
One of Olbrich’s four rare corpse flowers is now in bloom for the first time since 2010.
FROM MADISON MAGAZINE: Plant to bloom for first time in nearly 12 years at Olbrich
Olbrich staff announced the bloom Wednesday afternoon on Facebook, adding it will likely only last 24 to 36 hours before it collapses. Plant lovers and curious Madisonians alike have been waiting for days as the plant showed signs it was nearing bloom.
To make sure as many people as possible have a chance to experience the phenomenon for themselves, the Bolz Conservatory’s hours have been extended on Thursday. The facility will now be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Corpse flowers earned their name from their putrid bloom, which smells like rotten flesh as a way to attract pollinators.
