PLEASANT SPRINGS, Wis. — An SUV burst into flames at a rural Dane County gas station Thursday morning, causing damage to another car and the gas station, the Cottage Grove Fire Department said.
In a news release, the fire department said firefighters were called to the BP gas station in the 2700 block of County Highway N in the town of Pleasant Springs just after 9 a.m. for reports of a vehicle engulfed in flames.
When firefighters arrived, they found the 2016 Volvo XC90 engulfed. The vehicle’s fuel tank ruptured shortly after crews got to the scene, making their initial response more difficult.
Firefighters were able to put out the fire, which officials believe started in the SUV’s engine compartment, likely due to a malfunctioning coolant system. A nearby Nissan Altima suffered moderate heat damage to the driver’s side, and the gas station suffered minor non-structural damage.
By around 9:30 a.m., crews appeared to have fully extinguished the flames.
The fire department estimated damage to be around $40,000. No injuries were reported.

The fire sent a plume of smoke into the air that was visible to drivers on Interstate 39/90 nearby.
