MONONA, Wis. — The Monona Police Department is reminding drivers to slow down in school zones as kids head back to the classroom this week.
During a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Chief Brian Chaney announced a new school traffic safety initiative aimed at keeping kids safe.
“We’re taking the efforts at the Monona Police Department to make sure that we send a strong and resounding message about traffic safety and the importance of keeping our most precious commodity safe and that is our kids,” he said.
The department plans to increase traffic enforcement around schools, with particular focus on areas along Monona Drive, Nichols Road and Broadway, over the next couple of weeks. Message boards and social media posts will warn drivers in advance to drive carefully and watch for pedestrians at crosswalks.
“The goal here is voluntary compliance,” Chaney said. “We want folks to slow down, pay attention and be cognizant that there might be a police officer monitoring the road conditions and traffic speeds at your location.”
