MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Police Department says Madison East High School was put into “secure” status for a short time Thursday morning after they received a secondhand report of someone with a gun in the area.
Police say officers were called to the 2000 block of E. Washington Ave. at about 11:30 a.m. Thursday after getting the report from a person who was not at the scene. Since the area was so close to East High School, police say the school was placed into “secure” status — meaning the school made sure all students and staff were inside the building and exterior doors were locked, with the school day continuing as normal.
When officers got to the area, they said they found a 62-year-old man on his front porch who was intoxicated and having a mental health crisis — but did not have a gun.
The department says officers de-escalated the situation verbally and offered to drive the man to a local hospital for medical and mental health treatment. The man was not arrested and no charges were filed.
The “secure” status at East High School was lifted once officers were able to determine there was no danger to the community.
